Hi there and welcome to City Girl Grows. The idea for this site has been rolling around my head for a few years and I have decided to make it a reality. To be honest, I don’t have any major expectations for this endeavor but I really want to share with you my gardening journey and what I’ve learned along the way.
Where it started
I started seriously gardening about 10 years ago. At the time, I was living in a 500 square foot apartment and had absolutely no room for anything other than a few houseplants. Heading to work one morning, the road I normally took was closed for construction so I went down a side street and discovered that there was a community garden only a few miles from my apartment. That afternoon I filled out an application, sent it in, and a few months later I was informed that I was the new steward of plot #75.

I know it’s not much to look at but I was incredibly proud of my little 10×20 garden. There was something therapeutic about getting my hands in the soil and watching things grow. I had just about zero experience growing much of anything so my expectations were pretty low. To my surprise, everything I planted did really well and I was hooked.

Over the years, I’ve been able to double my plot size to 20×20 and I am so grateful for the community I’ve been able to build here. At some point I’ll make separate post about what community gardening has done for me but I think it has been one of the best things I’ve ever done.
In 2016 we bought our first home and I was so excited to finally have my own gardening space. Being in the city means that our yard is very small so I have worked to make the best out of it. In my next next post, I’ll write more about my home garden but thanks for reading.
I’m really looking forward to sharing more and if you would like to get notified about new posts, type your email in the box below and hit subscribe.

Welcome to the gardening blog community! Your plot looks like it has good soil, and you are definitely making good progress. I love reading about allotments, and if we had them here, I’d definitely have one just for the “community” of gardeners to interact with. I’m lucky to have plenty of land for my gardening urges, and I’m not sure I’d like all the rubbish that seems to be in so many allotment gardens in view all the time, but your community plots seem more tidy than many I see. Best of luck!
Thanks so much! I am very lucky that my community garden is fairly well organized and folks tend to be tidy. The soil has taken some work but I think it’s finally at a point where it doesn’t need much in the way of amendments. Just a little compost and some shredded fall leaves.
I can’t find a contact for you. Do you really have scotch bonnet peppers? I haven’t been able to find them since Rosbys closed.
Yes! We have scotch bonnet peppers.
